What is an Abacus

An abacus is a simple counting and calculation tool that has been used for hundreds of years. It has withstood the test of time and is still to be found on the desks and in the homes of professionals the world over. It is composed of a frame and rods on which the user slides beads to count and calculate.

How does an Abacus Work

The standard abacus has 2 divisions on it’s rows. The first division has 4 beads, each worth 1 unit. The second division has 1 bead, worth 5 units. In this way, each row can be used to count from 0 to 9 and represents one digit when writing a number on paper (the one’s place, ten’s place, hundred’s place, etc).
